Sanit\u00e0 Pubblica, SSR Emilia Romagna]<\/em> .<\/p>\n<p>However oxygen peroxide <strong>should be treated very cautiously<\/strong>, particularly if it is concentrated and if it is used together with an alkaline agent, which increases its reactivity: until it is all degraded in water and oxygen, it is <strong>highly harmful against living cells<\/strong> &#8211; both microbes&#8217; or human cells &#8211; towards which it shows to act as a strong mutagen.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed very few amounts of oxygen peroxide are generated right there, <strong>inside our cells<\/strong>, as a secondary effect of energy production mechanisms involving oxygen molecules; as they are vital processes, the body protects itself from secondary effects with specific enzymes, in particular <strong>catalase<\/strong>, able to rapidly destroy peroxide molecules newly formed. Catalase generally protects from <strong>free radicals<\/strong> and from\u00a0reactive oxygen species (ROS).<\/p>\n<p>Both <strong>sodium percarbonate<\/strong> (that Bensos calls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bensos.com\/en\/additivo-smacchiante-sodio-percarbonato-candeggio-sbianca-senza-cloro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bleaching Powder<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bensos.com\/en\/acqua-ossigenata-sbiancante-tazzine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Oxygen peroxide<\/strong><\/a> show long-term toxicity, but only if we touch them when they are reactive.
