In the consumer society, we look at the dramatic increase of products available on the market, to be chosen among countless brands and categories. How to make a choice?

Let us take an example: washing-up detergents. Cheap products apparently comply with the daily need to save money. Neverthless, high dosages of these products have to be used to achieve appreciable results: raw materials are “adjusted” with the aim to keep production costs the lowest possible, so efficacy is low too. In fact washing surfactants concentration is low; sodium chloride is very high, as well as perfume and dyes. “Sodium chloride” is nothing more than table salt, sometimes used as a preservative, more often used (as in this case) as a thickener, that increases product consistency to the touch. What is the result? A detergent that seems to be very efficient, but is only thicker, more coloured and more perfumed towards other less “showy” products; when we use it, it reveals to be slightly more efficient than pure water in soil removing, and the result is that we have to increase very much dosages.

Moreover: highly concentrated table salt in addition to totally absent moisturizing agents (as they are intended to be relatively expensive ingredients, liable to increase production costs) make this kind of products very irritating towards hands skin, enough to make frequent moisturizing and repairing cream applications unavoidable. To say nothing of preservatives, perfumes and dyes, generally chosen without caring for environment safeguard and long-term toxicity.

Is it really worth it? Maybe it would be a good idea to try completely different products, as regards to the ingredients. In the case of washing-up liquid, the use of a more concentrated and balanced detergent, which follows strict criteria, may allow to optimise he use and reduce costs:

  • a sufficient concentration of surfactants allows to reduce amounts of detergent required for cleaning;
  • low concentration of table salt (sodium chloride), added to high concentrations of moisturizing agents  lower the product strenght towards the skin.

Among detergents on the market showing such features, Bensos’ Washing Up liquid is outstanding for the lack of allergens, the rigorous choice of non-toxic ingredients and the very low environmental impact. No dyes, no fragrance, quite liquid consistency, actually it is a concentrated detergent with high levels of washing surfactants, with low sodium chloride and very rich in moisturizing agents to keep safe the hands. Longtime users can confirm the good quality-price ratio. For a complete sustainability, not only towards the environment.
